Shanghai Sparkles in the Rain

We arrived in Shanghai just hours before the rain started.

Our first stop was Shanghai Old Street and Yu Garden.

JSG_8176

We strolled across the Bridge of Nine Turnings

JSG_8163

to Huxingting Teahouse, the oldest teahouse in Asia, where we enjoyed tea and a snack

JSG_8133

We admired the detail on the neighboring rooftop from our table

JSG_8146

and then the rain came…

JSG_8458

We ducked under eves taking in the views through restaurant windows

JSG_8111

and shops.

JSG_8183

And after 11 days of travel we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at M on the Bund with spectacular views

JSG_8375

of the Bund

JSG_8348

JSG_8340

and across the Huangpu River.

JSG_8367

The next morning we explored less traveled sections of the city.

JSG_8621

As we were peering down alleys

JSG_8619

we were struck by the contrast of the shanties against the modern buildings.

JSG_8615

Next we visited the Jade Buddha Temple where the moist air was filled with incense

JSG_8528

and the bright red lanterns posed a sharp contrast to the grey day.

JSG_8605

This Buddha is one of my favorite pictures.

JSG_8592

There were fascinating details on the rooftops

JSG_8576

JSG_8480

as well as the ceilings

JSG_8569

JSG_8565

JSG_8567

and amazing carvings (this is one piece of wood).

JSG_8518

This artist gave “hand painted”

JSG_8505

a whole new meaning.

JSG_8502

Next we visited the Tianzifang neighborhood

JSG_8324 JSG_8276

and enjoyed some sweet treats

JSG_8275

while strolling the labyrinth of colorful alleyways and shops.

Then we said goodbye to Shanghai

JSG_8440

And headed for Hangzhou….

Grow Love

It’s amazing what you can make from a lovely pile of fiber

with a little soap and water, bubble wrap

and a wooden dowel.

It was my first time Nuno felting. My friend Patty joined me in the fun and here are some of our pieces of fabric we created.

Serendipity would have it that one of my pieces turned out to be the perfect size for a prayer flag.

I added the sentiment “grow love” by tacking ribbon in place and a bit of recycled bridal lace, a gift from my generous friend Carmen, at the top. For more prayer flags please visit The Prayer Flag Project.

Of course we couldn’t just stop with the Nuno felting and tried out my wonderful new Baby Lock felting machine (a Christmas gift from Prince Charming =).

Adding ruffles with silk ribbons and velvet patches to other bits. Now to see what they will  become!

Jeju Island

Continuing where I left off last year with our Asian trip we visit Jeju Island, our last destination in South Korea.

JSG_7906

Jeju is the largest volcanic island in Korea.

JSG_7928

Full of natural beauty

and bustling commerce.

The markets are colorful patchworks

During our stay we visited Daheeyeon Tea Farm

JSG_7565

which is a very peaceful and beautiful place.

JSG_7559

And Manjanggul Cave created when the Geomunoreum volcanic crater erupted

JSG_7584

and flowed through creating a lava tube

JSG_7591

JSG_7635

which had me in awe of the power of the flowing molten lava.

JSG_7611

The lines in the rock were made as the flowing molten lava changed levels.

JSG_7675

This lava column was created by lava that flowed through a hole in the ceiling.

JSG_7751

Next we drove along the coast in search of the famous Jeju women divers

JSG_7747

JSG_7734

and found them in a cove. See the three orange buoys below?

JSG_7697

Our driver explained they are becoming extinct because no young women are interested in such a hard life

JSG_7726

and now all that are left are “Grannies” rather than the young women of island lore past.

JSG_7801

Dong Amsa Temple sits on a hillside overlooking the water

I will leave you with a walk through some island flowers.

Treasures from the Past

Each year I try to make a special ornament for our tree. Joe’s mother had given us a yarn ball which was hand spun by his grandmother Sophie who we lost this year.

IMG_1361

After rolling the yarn ball in glitter I soldered a charm with pictures from Joe’s childhood encased in beveled glass I had mirrored and antiqued.

IMG_1365

Using jump rings I strung each component on hand dyed ribbon

IMG_1362

adding a crystal charm and a sentiment on a recycled tag.

My wish is that it will be treasured and enjoyed by future generations in a more peaceful world. Happy holidays xoxo

Getting Organized

Any mixed media artist knows how things accumulate. We are always picking up little treasures at flea markets or off the ground that catch our eye without a specific purpose in mind waiting for that moment when it becomes that special something we needed to inspire or complete a piece of art.

I recently found these wonderful large printer drawers to store my small bits.

They became works of art on their own when I randomly lined each section with scraps of vintage wallpaper, sheet music, wrapping paper and book pages.

Now my tiny treasures have a home

and more importantly I know where to find them!

Wings and Wishes

I am on my way to the post office to mail a package of angel wings to Hip Chick Designs in Benicia, CA.

This is the first time I am attempting to sell my art. Will they sell?

I don’t know but what’s the worse that can happen? I will have lots of wings for ornaments, inspiration and gift tags next year? Another first!

Broom Fairy Felted Journal

Yesterday it was wool roving I dyed with Kool-Aid and today it is a sweet little journal waiting to be gifted.

OK, so I admit I am already thinking about Christmas but better early than late!

Besides I needed another sample for my needle felting class. =)

I will sew in the last signature for part of my class demonstration.

Dyeing Wool Roving with Kool-Aid

Tags

, , ,

In preparation for my upcoming needle felting class I decided to try dyeing my own wool roving with Kool-Aid. It was even easier than I thought it would be. I woke up this morning and it is dry and ready to felt!

Here was my easy process:

I filled bowls with four cups very hot water and 1/4 cup white vinegar and added one packet of Kool-Aid to each. The first bowl is Peach Mango and the second is Strawberry.

I put natural wool roving in and turned it a few times to saturate and let it sit for about 45 minutes and then poured the roving into a colander and gently squeezed out the excess water. I then filled the bowl with fresh warm water and rinsed the roving and repeated a few times, sqeezing gently and rinsing in a clean bowl of water.

Then I rolled the roving in absorbent towels and pressed again to remove as much moisture as possible. At this point it was slightly damp and not having a clothesline I hung it on my chandelier to finish drying.

Funny how the colors go with my home!

Needle Felting Love and Class!

I am working on two altered books for friends with similar themes. I found some old  photograph postcards of an actress from the late 1800’s in my stash and decided to use her pensive yet serene photo. Now to carry out my idea I needed an angel wing… I love needle felting and am always trying to find new ways to use different techniques with it in my artwork. Why not try to felt a wing?

Guess what? It was easy! And so is needle felting. I will be teaching a needle felting class at Artistic Artifacts next month. If you live in Northern VA come join me and lets have some needle felting fun together and create something beautiful!

To create the needle felted wing I cut a wing shape out of thin fabric and needle felted layers of dyed cheesecloth, wool roving and Angelina fibers until I was pleased with the color, texture and thickness. Then I cut a slightly larger wing shape out of tulle and placed it behind the wing.

Finally I machine stitched the outline as well as a few random lines from the wing tip upwards to simulate feathers and voilà, a wing!

So come join me for a class next month and learn how fun and easy needle felting can be. Hope to see you there!

With thoughts of love, peace and remembrance to all on this September 11th. xoxo
